This watercolor and gouache image owes a little to Zao Wou Ki’s painting 13.01.76 in coloring but is otherwise a dreamier, fuzzier, hazy version of what could be the view up a hill in the local arb on a summer day (if you squint). The title refers to the early Greek earth goddess. As to Zao Wou Ki, we were treated to an exhibit recently in our local art museum and I found the work amazing. One simple piece, my favorite, consists only of a few black lines brushed across a large paper in various styles. I’ve long known I have a lot of trouble stopping myself when I paint and tend to add too much. I can truly appreciate the simple eloquence of those well-chosen lines.
